Holiday - St. Patrick's Day Parade
St. Croix — March 17, 2009
The St.Criox ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE began in 1969 when a group of local businessmen convened in HARRY'S OFFICE BAR on Queen Cross St. in Christiansted for a "cool one". The conversation got around to holidays and why St. Patrick's Day wasn't celebrated in the Virgin Islands, when so many other holidays were. Something had to be done! Without further ado, a stakebed truck was commandeered and piano put on top. The newly organized committee and fellow supporters were aboard singing Irish and local songs and saluting shoppers and shop-keepers, who came out to see what all the noise was about. Those who were already wearing green got into the spirit at once, while others who needed something green ran into the shops to find it, running back outside to wave at the paraders. Some even joined the procession! And so, the first USVI St. Patrick's Day Parade was born.

Special - Jump Up!
Christiansted, St. Croix — May 1, 2009
Jump Up, held about four times each year, is a cultural celebration that takes place in the streets and along the boardwalk of Christiansted. Quickly becoming one of the islands favorite social events for both locals and visitors alike, this carnival-like party begins at 6pm and goes until about 10pm. Streets are closed, and stores and restaurants stay open late, with many offering special discounts. You will also find street vendors offering food and drink, arts and crafts, fine hand-crafted jewelry and much more.
Live music is also a big part of Jump Up. Steel drum bands and other musicians perform on many street corners. Mocko Jumbies, said to ward off evil, dance in the streets. The Mocko Jumbie has been a part of Virgin Islands culture for more than 200 years. Sample local cuisine while you listen to authentic Caribbean music.
