Useful Information

BANKING
Currency in the U.S. Virgin Islands is the U.S. dollar. There are ATMs located throughout the islands, especially at bank branches as well as many hotel lobbies and major supermarkets. Banks are generally open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with drive-through and walk-up windows open beyond these times. Some banks do have Saturday hours, typically 9 a.m. to noon. Traveler's checks and Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted. There is no sales tax in the territory.

COMMUNICATIONS
Most hotels and resorts, as well as many villas in the Virgin Islands, have in-room telephones; and most major U.S. cell phone service providers have coverage areas in the USVI. When calling the U.S. mainland from the Virgin Islands, dial "1," then the area code and number. The area code for the USVI is 340. However, there is no need to dial "1" and the area code when making local calls from a USVI land line.

Many hotels, resorts and villas offer either data ports for laptop plug-in or Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is also offered in several places and there are several Internet cafés on the islands.

CUSTOMS & DUTY

The U.S. Virgin Islands has raised its duty-free alowance to $1,600 per person. Family members traveling together can make a joint declaration that increases the amount of their allowance. Gifts valued $100 or less can be mailed (no more than one package per day) and do not need to be declared in the exemption. U.S. visitors are allowed to return with six bottles of liquor if one of the bottles was produced locally. Duty of 6 percent is charge for purchases totalling more than $1,600. Meats and fresh fruits may not be transported into the U.S.

Duty-free best buys are found on perfumes, crystal, china, jewelry, watches, cameras and electronics, such as stereo and video equipment, porcelain, leather, liquor and fine liqueurs, cigarettes and cigars, linens and designer clothing.
