Top 5 Ways to Enjoy St. Croix
- Snorkel Buck Island. A must for all visitors is a half-day excursion to uninhabited Buck Island Reef National Monument just off the northeast coast. Swim from a pristine beach and snorkel above an underwater trail with gear and instructions provided by your boat captain.
- Roam Through the Ruins. St. Croix is loaded with plantation-era leftovers, so be on the lookout for roadside ruins and intriguing sites like the Nature Conservancy's Estate Little Princess and Estate Mount Washington. View properties not usually open to the public by joining a historian-led Ruins Ramble, sponsored by the St. Croix Landmarks Association.
- See the Salt River. Join a guide or paddle a kayak at your own pace through the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve to the spot where hostile Indians greeted a landing party Christopher Columbus sent ashore. Say hello to protected wildlife in mangrove forests, swim from a deserted beach or take a nighttime tour to glide through sparkling bioluminescence.
- Hike Your Heart Out. Sample St. Croix's unspoiled, rugged landscape and hidden natural treasures, such as Annaly Bay, Creque Dam, Monk's Bath, Jack's Bay and Isaac Point. Trails are often steep, so hook up with a naturalist guide or call the St. Croix Environmental Association for suggestions on eco-events.
- Lime a Little. Relaxing is essential to the St. Croix experience, so hang out at a beach bar, sit by the boardwalk or stake out a park bench. Take in free, mellow events like Frederiksted's Sunset Jazz on the third Friday of each month. And in Christiansted, occasional "Jump Up" street fairs and Art Thursday gallery walks are also great times to lime with the locals.
